What Is the Dispute Resolution Program (DRP)?

The DRP is a community-based mediation service that facilitates communication between tenants and landlords to resolve conflicts amicably. It’s particularly useful for issues like rent increases, maintenance disputes, or lease disagreements. The program offers a neutral third-party mediator to help both sides reach a mutually acceptable solution.

✅ When Can You Use It?

You can utilize the DRP if:

  • You reside in the City of Los Angeles.

  • You’re facing issues such as:

    • Disputes over rent increases.

    • Maintenance or repair concerns.

    • Lease term disagreements.

    • Eviction notices or threats.

  • Both parties are willing to participate voluntarily.

🛠️ How Does It Work?

  1. Initiate Contact: Reach out to the DRP to express interest in mediation.

  2. Scheduling: If both parties agree, a mediation session is scheduled at a convenient time.

  3. Mediation Session: A trained mediator facilitates a discussion between you and your landlord to explore possible resolutions.

  4. Agreement: If an agreement is reached, it’s documented and can be legally binding.

💡 Tips for Tenants

  • Act Promptly: Engage in mediation as soon as a dispute arises to prevent escalation.

  • Prepare Documentation: Bring all relevant documents, such as lease agreements, rent receipts, and communication records.

  • Be Open-Minded: Approach the session with a willingness to listen and compromise.

  • Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with tenant rights under the Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO) if applicable.

📞 How to Access the DRP

  • Phone: Call the DRP at (213) 978-1880 to initiate the process.

  • Email: Send an email to mediate@lacity.org expressing your interest in mediation.

  • Online: Visit the City Attorney’s DRP page for more information.

Utilizing the DRP can be a proactive step in resolving disputes efficiently and maintaining a stable living situation. It’s a resource designed to empower tenants and landlords to find common ground without the need for legal proceedings.
