If you’re involved in a small claims case in Los Angeles County, the court offers a free Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform to help parties settle disputes without going to court.

What is Small Claims ODR?

The Small Claims ODR program is a free online service that allows plaintiffs and defendants to negotiate and resolve disputes remotely. The platform facilitates confidential communication, document sharing, and the drafting of settlement agreements.

How It Works

  1. Registration: Both parties must register for ODR within five calendar days of receiving notice from the court.

  2. Negotiation: The platform guides users through a step-by-step process to discuss and propose resolutions.

  3. Mediation: If needed, trained mediators from the Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA) or the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) can assist in reaching an agreement.

  4. Settlement: Agreements reached are electronically filed with the court, potentially eliminating the need for a court appearance.

If no agreement is reached within two court days before the scheduled hearing, the case proceeds to court as planned.

Benefits

  • Cost-Effective: Free to use, saving on legal fees and court costs.

  • Convenient: Accessible online, eliminating the need to travel to court.

  • Confidential: Discussions and documents shared are not part of the public court record.
